Non-Human Identities (NHIs) enable traditional and AI-based applications, services, and automated processes to authenticate, communicate, and perform actions across product and Information Technology (IT) environments as well as with third parties. Unlike human users, NHIs include service accounts, API keys, cloud roles, container workloads, CI/CD pipelines, and machine-generated credentials that facilitate secure access to systems and data (Fig. 1). As part of their digital transformation, organizations continue to adopt cloud, automation, and AI-driven infrastructures. As a result, NHIs have grown exponentially, outnumbering human identities by vast margins. Properly managing and securing NHIs is critical to preventing unauthorized access, privilege escalation, and credential abuse, ensuring that automated processes operate securely and in compliance with security best practices.
